<image:caption>As the air cools and daylight shortens, the creatures of the forest begin to prepare. Squirrels gather acorns. Bears retreat to their dens. Even the smallest insects tuck themselves into bark and soil. Nature knows what’s coming. There’s no guilt. No apology for slowing down. Just instinct and wisdom directing them toward what will help them make it through. We, humans, can learn from this. Just like the squirrel, we may find ourselves doing a similar kind of gathering. Grieving or not, we can collect small comforts, joyful memories, and reminders of love that act as our emotional stores through the hardest days (weather related and...otherwise). Sometimes we may withdraw a little to protect our energy. Sometimes what once felt like an “easy” yes, becomes a “no.” When done with intention, these shifts are not avoidance — it’s conservation. It’s the heart, brain, and nervous system doing what they need to persevere. In grief, this intentional turn inward isn’t failure — it is wisdom. During hibernation life doesn’t disappear. It persists. Quietly. Purposefully. Hibernation is permission to choose slowness. To create seasonal structure around recovery, nourishment, and pacing. To prepare before we run out of energy — not after. So, as we move into fall together, I invite you to experiment with a new concept I’m calling Modern Hibernation and choose rest as a strategy to proactively heal your grief, not as a last resort. Remember to enjoy the little things, Marie</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lessons from Nature, A metaphor for Grief: As autumn deepens, the sun lingers a little less each day. There’s beauty in the golden glow, but also a sense of loss. A recognition that something familiar is slipping away. This seasonal shift can mirror grief. We may notice the light fading from certain parts of our life, or the warmth that once carried us beginning to wane. The air feels different. Our rhythm changes. And though we know, deep down, that darkness is part of the cycle of life, this fact alone doesn’t always make the grief (or the darkness) easier to bear. Grief invites us to turn inward. It asks us to conserve, to simplify, to focus on what matters. Post-traumatic growth often begins in these quiet, hidden places—when we stop trying to chase the old light and instead trust (accept) that this slower rhythm has meaning of its own. And though the days may be shorter, the light we do receive takes on a new richness—a quality that feels sacred, fleeting, and worth noticing. The slow retreat of the sun reminds us that even in loss, beauty and purpose remain. Fun Fact About Marie: I enjoy playing video games. I prefer side scrolling games vs. FPSs. My favs are classics like Mario, Tetris and PacMan. I even have an “extra life” tattoo. We have a vintage arcade table. IYKYK. (pictured: vintage video game images like pacman and an extra life; tetris blocks; arcade). Family Friend Joke: What do snowmen eat for breakfast? Frosted flakes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>(Hospice Group Flyer) The Child Loss Group that I facilitate for Hospice of the Chesapeake is growing. Grieving parents gather, share, and support one another in a space that truly understands. Remember: make time for your grief, or it will demand time from you — usually when you least have it. If you’d like to join or learn more, reach out! (Group photo under a large tree) Huge thanks to everyone who joined me for my October Nature Event: The Wisdom of Trees! We learned how trees gracefully let go (hello, abscission ), made new friends and reflected on the relationship between trees and humans. Here’s to listening to the quiet wisdom all around us and for reconnecting with Mother Nature. ❤️ (Purple ribbon and golden sun) I was recently a guest on Wellness Rising, a podcast by Wellness House Annapolis. On this episode, we talk about the kind of loss that shakes your soul and the quiet, aching question: “Will I ever feel okay again?” “Marie offers more than answers She offers comfort. Gentle wisdom. A path forward. Through nature. Through compassion. Through hope. If you're carrying pain from grief, this conversation is for you.”</image:caption>

I’m required to complete 100 hours every five years to maintain my national counselor certification. This cycle, I completed 130 hours in brainspotting, nature-informed therapy, and grief education (not counting consultation teams!). Learning new things that I want to learn AND getting work to pay for it? Definitely a win. PS: It’s me. I’m work. I’m paying for it. LOL. Find everything in one place—insights, features, and commentary on grief, healing, and mental health. (Photo of Marie and two colleagues in nature; Marie presenting to a group of therapist) I had the honor & privilege of leading a NIT Logistics “Lunch & Learn” at Camp Puh’Tok with the Center for Nature Informed Therapy during the Fall 2025 Foundational Training. I answered the “how-to” questions for newly trained clinicians. My goal was to boost their confidence when implementing nature-informed therapy and interventions “out in the wild.” It’s always inspiring to support new therapists as they bring nature-informed therapy into their practices.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pushing Daisies Spring 2026 Dates: Pushing Daisies is a group for parents navigating life after the death of their child. Groups provide an opportunity to connect with others who are facing similar challenges in life. This group provides a space for honoring our individual journeys while allowing us to learn from one another. Consider this group to supplement individual therapy or as a self-care option. Dates: Feb 2, March 2, April 13, May 4th I had the privilege of teaching master’s-level clinicians at the University of Maryland about traumatic grief. We explored a detailed case study, discussing assessment, diagnosis, rule-in/rule-out considerations, and PTSD symptoms, while highlighting key supports and best practices for grief-informed care. It was inspiring to see future therapists engage deeply with these concepts and strengthen their skills in compassionate, evidence-based practice. This past August, I had the privilege of being part of Camp Nabi, a truly inspiring grief camp for kids hosted by Hospice of the Chesapeake. Witnessing these children find connection, reclaim their stories, and realize they are not alone in their grief was nothing short of life-changing. When you get to be part of another’s healing journey, it changes you — for the better. The weekend was filled with courage, compassion, laughter, and tears — reminders that while grief is hard, it’s softer when shared. <image:caption>It’s like “Where’s Waldo?,” except it’s “Where’s Marie” Initially, I RSVPd no but WAS able to attend this Community Open House for Hospice of the Chesapeake. Unsurprisingly, I found myself giving tours to community partners, donors, other volunteers and supporters of Hospice of the Chesapeake. The entire campus has had a facelift! The building that houses my office is one of them. The new “Children's Studio” is therapeutic & fun! (Pictured: Marie and several supporters of Hospice). I was honored to facilitate a meeting for Anne Arundel County Chapter of The Bereaved Parents of the USA in October. We laughed, we cried and we honored our children.vThe community created by grieving parents is one of healing and hope. If you are in need of grief support, consider this local chapter or search for a chapter near you at www.bereavedparentsusa.org (Photo of the Bereaved Parents logo). This September marks 10years that I haven't been able to fluff Harvey's hair. In this article, I write about how grief shows in familiar and different ways each year — sometimes we are hit before, when we know what’s coming, and sometimes after, when the sorrow leaves us drained. My heart remembers the tears, the deep loss, and the way everything changed. Read for insights on our journey of love and loss with Harvey, our Brave Little Warrior. <image:caption>I recently attended Hospice of the Chesapeake’s inaugural Sip & Savor: A Taste of Prince George’s at the beautiful Newton White Mansion in Mitchellville. The event brought together incredible local chefs, delicious food and drinks, and meaningful connection — all in support of compassionate hospice and palliative care. I volunteered to share my experiences with Camp Nabi at a table in the “program showcase” area. You know me, talking about grief is my jam! It was a wonderful celebration of community and purpose, raising funds to provide care, counseling, and support for patients and families across Prince George’s County. Truly an afternoon to remember! Fun Fact: This property is home to an old growth stand of trees thought to be some of the oldest on the EAST COAST! I’ll be back to visit the trees soon. (Pictured: Marie in front of Newton White Mansion). In October, I was invited to facilitate an environmental wellness event on behalf of Community Initiatives at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. This hands-on gathering invited participants to slow down, connect with the earth, and create nature art using found natural items. I had so much fun preparing for this event! Leaves and twigs became tools for reflection, creativity, and conversation as we explored how simple acts of creation can strengthen our relationship with nature and each other...and ultimately improving our environmental wellness. Participants voted for the “fan favorite,” who got to go home with this bouquet of wild flowers from my meadow. (Pictured: nature crafts made with found nature items).</image:caption>

<image:title>Announcements & Media - Sharing is Caring: How our story will benefit Hospice Fundraiser “Fashion for A Cause” - I've been asked to share our story—of Harvey's life, our journey with hospice and everything since—at this year's "Fashion for a Cause" fundraising event presented by Hospice of the Chesapeake.</image:title>
<image:caption>At this event, local community models showcase new fashions from Annapolis retailers while guests enjoy food and drink by area restaurants and food trucks. Proceeds from this FUNdraising event support Chesapeake's Kids. <image:caption>If you know me as a nature-informed therapist, you probably aren’t surprised to learn that environmental initiatives and concepts are important to me. If you know me as a grief therapist, you won’t be at all surprised to see me in nature or learn that I incorporate nature in my grief work, because nature heals. If you know me as a child & teen therapist, it’s probably no surprise to you that I include outdoor playtime and exploration in my work. Afterall, nature has the unique ability to help us learn about ourselves in non-judgemental ways. If you know me as Marie, a friend or family member, you are certainly not surprised to hear that I corralled yet another new frolleague (friend + colleague), to collect trash with me while on a nature walk. I love that my new frolleague didn’t even hesitate when I broke out my “handy” grabber and a bag. If you’re new to me, hi! Welcome to Networking in Nature with Marie.</image:caption>

<image:title>Announcements & Media - Hospice isn’t just for terminally ill old people… - Did you know? Hospice offers a WIDE range of FREE and low-cost services for the entire community–not just for old folks who are dying and their families.</image:title>
<image:caption>As the parent of a chronically ill and medically fragile child, it was SCARY when the hospital team at Johns Hopkins Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Baltimore started mentioning, “quality of life,” “we’ve done all we can do” and “hospice” during our last staycation in the summer of 2015. My family and I were DISTRAUGHT at the idea that we were “giving up” on our four year old warrior, Harvey, by signing up for the program that meant death was imminent–-hospice. Pediatric hospice. I didn’t even know pediatric hospice was a “thing.” As we learned more about hospice, specifically pediatric hospice, we heard over and over that “hospice isn’t just for old people” and “going on hospice doesn’t always mean someone is about to die.” Pediatric hospice was different such that it was designed to be flexible and provided much needed support for families going through the hardest time in their lives. Pediatric hospice patients were allowed to bounce on and off hospice as their medical supports dictated and, should the child find the road to recovery, they could even graduate from hospice altogether. What?! I had never considered that a hospice patient could exit hospice in any way other than by death. I was hopeful. And just like that, hospice morphed from SCARY to SANCTUARY. Read more about our journey with pediatric hospice and resources available in Maryland here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Announcements & Media - Out with the old, in with the new: Why changes in grief theory matter - Gone are the“stages” of grief; Enter the Six Needs of the Grieving</image:title>
<image:caption>It can be hard to put into words what you need when you are grieving. Many are familiar with Elizabeth Kubler Ross’ “Stages of grief” that helped to conceptualize grief and “how to do it.” However, even Elizabeth said that the stage model was adopted too strictly by the public (media) and as a result important aspects of the grief process, like going backwards or bouncing around, were thought not to be possible. Some people even thought that if they did bounce around they were doing “grief wrong.” David Kessler—a world renowned grief expert, mentee and friend of Elizabeth—expanded on his friends model (with her support) and developed the Six Needs of the Grieving. This updated model of grief acknowledges and allows for the back-and-forth-ups-and-downs of life after the death of your special person. The 6 Needs model highlights the importance of Meaning Making and reiterates that grief is not linear and that going around in circles does not immediately indicate something pathological. Whew! What a relief! One of the ways I support my clients deep in grief is to teach David’s Six Needs. As a Certified Grief Educator, I use his model as part of the curriculum of my child-loss support group for parents, Pushing Daisies. In our 90mins together, we accomplish many tasks of the grieving including sharing stories about our loved ones without pity or shame and working through challenges we have on the horizon. Take a look at March 2024s group agenda for a peek at how I structure our group. If you or someone you know is navigating life after child-loss, please know support is available from others who have been there. Reach out here or grief.com or Tender Hearts community on Facebook. Grief is hard, but it’s harder alone. Pushing Daisies meets virtually on the first Monday of every month and is open to anyone, anywhere in the United States. An absence note for work can be provided. Join us or learn more https://www.genuineconnectionspsychotherapy.com/groups</image:caption>

<image:title>Announcements & Media - Your therapist, “in the media.” - I was mentioned on the Leading Lady Podcast where Business Coach AliceAnne Loftus leads listeners through an activity called “keep, stop and start.” As a member of AliceAnne’s Business Masterclass, I was asked to complete an “In vs. Out” activity in preparation for the new year, but I put my own spin on it and Keep. Stop. Start. was born. AliceAnne LOVED IT. I even used “keep, stop, start” with my own clients. Listen in for more!</image:title>

<image:title>Home - My mission is to support parents through their worst nightmare— the death of their child.</image:title>
<image:caption>Why? Because these parents are just like me—trying to navigating life after the unthinkable has happened. Connecting with other parents like me was a game-changer in my healing. I help parents on this very specific grief journey by sharing validating personal stories, laughing with you at morbid jokes and by using specialized skills, training and personal experience to process emotional trauma. My clients can access support through individual therapy, peer supports groups and workshops all of which have a focus on authentic connections, genuine emotional expression and post-traumatic growth. We work on what matters to you, in ways you may not have tried before, and connect you with other people who “get it”—all so you know you are not alone in this journey and so you can learn how to enjoy the simple pleasures in life again.</image:caption>

<image:title>Experience & Training - Meet Marie</image:title>
<image:caption>Therapists are trained to have the capability of building relationships, even in the most challenging circumstances. However, we are simultaneously taught to keep our personal lives out of the therapy session. Confusing, right? Because a strong therapeutic alliance is the best indicator of client success, it is more important to me than ever that I am my true self in session. You will get the real me so that we can build a relationship based on authenticity. Therapists are often portrayed as dry and aloof (thanks Freud). Very clipboard and “how does that make you feel?” Modern day therapists tend to be less “bump on a log” and more “cool and edgy.” Despite the evolution of therapists, clients have shared with me that therapy in the past has not been effective for them because the therapist “sat across from [them] taking notes” or only ever said “tell me more” and “mmm-hmm.” This is not me. I have found that clients heal more completely when we can be unapologetically authentic with each other— or when we have a genuine connection. These connections come naturally when we have shared experiences (and sometimes you just want to work with someone who truly understands you). This means that in sessions you get the real Marie—the one that tells personal stories that validate you, has a morbid sense of humor, frequently curses and will be silly with you (ask me about my hidden talent). You get a therapist with a bright personality that has the skills, training and experience to support you…all in a non-judgmental environment. But “why” am a therapist, especially one that wants to work with children and families in their darkest hours? Many of my colleagues would say something along the lines of, “I want to help people.” Okay, but WHY? If it were me asking, I would want to know what happened in your life that made you want to help others in THIS way? Many therapists would not answer this question directly because it would be too personal. We were trained to keep these sorts of things to ourselves. With me, you are going to get the authentic answer. Throughout my life, I have always been interested in cultural and societal differences when navigating death and dying. Afterall, death is the great equalizer. You may have noticed that there are people who are comfortable talking about difficult subjects like the death and dying process. It turns out I am one of those people. I have found supporting families in mourning particularly rewarding. My interests, personal life and career aspirations crossed paths when my first child, Harvey, died in September 2015 at age 4. When it is clinically appropriate, I will share details of my experiences of child-loss and life after loss with you. The good, the bad and the ugly. Doesn’t get more authentic than that. You can read more about Harvey and our journey. Below (and in no particular order) is a list of my lived experiences, specialties, modalities, and training. Don’t need grief support but like my overall vibe? Contact me for a free consultation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Experience & Training - My Why: Meet Harvey</image:title>
<image:caption>Harvey is my oldest son. A sweet boy with curly hair, like me. You’d often see him laughing while banging his favorite spoon on anything within arms reach. My spouse and I learned early on, before he was even born, that Harvey would face some struggles. We did not know that he would develop several serious medical conditions and later a rare form of epilepsy, Lennox Gastaut-Syndrome would cut his life short. “Harvey” means “battle-ready,” and he fought more wars within his own body than most of us will face in a lifetime. He did it with a strength and grace that we can only aspire to, and trust me when I say I do aspire to be like him. Harvey died at home in September 2015, at the age of 4. I knew that when I was ready, I wanted to support families like mine. Learn more about our journey, and find resources for families facing chronic illness, child loss, or rare diseases.</image:caption>
